Operation International is a program of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce. This program nurtures and fosters international understanding and creates a rich cultural diversity by providing civilian sponsors for the international officers attending Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and residing in the Leavenworth community.
Operation International's goal today remains as clear and simple as it was when first founded in 1952; to strive to provide a warm welcome to the International officers and their families on their arrival in the Leavenworth-Lansing community and to sustain that hospitality throughout their year with us. An immediate and practical function for the committee is to assist the family as they settle into our community. This can encompass a number of different activities – locating housing, purchasing and insuring automobiles, obtaining drivers’ licenses, acquainting family members with where and how to shop, helping enroll children in local schools, and sometimes demonstrating how we prepare those strange American foods. In sum, Operation International seeks to provide an immediate friend to newly arrived International families, and as sponsors try to remove the “bumps” along the cultural road one travels when joining a new community in what is in many cases a new and very different environment. A volunteer effort, Operation International sponsors come from all areas of Leavenworth-Lansing community and benefit greatly from the cultural exchange provided, often finding the beginning of lifelong friendships.
